Red is an arresting color in the garden, and with its airy, relaxed habit, ‘Mars Midget’ Pincushion Flower (Knautia macedonica) is irresistible to gardeners and pollinators alike. In early summer, blooms on carefree stems will dance with the wind, but do not flop. Each blossom is made up of crimson petals arranged in bristly bracts, above foliage that forms a tight clump. ‘Mars Midget’ is very striking when planted en masse, and as a cut flower. Plant several to create a large colorful splash – they look beautiful paired with silvery leaved companions. This plant is a favorite for gardens or meadows with damp soil.
Description
‘Mars Midget’ is an excellent compact cultivar of Pincushion Flower that produces light, airy buttons of color above low-growing, medium-green foliage in early summer. A lovely, crimson red touch for moist meadows or border edges. Blooms, which look like Scabiosa flowers, are held on thin, sturdy, wire-like stems. Each blossom is made up of crimson petals that contrast beautifully with other meadow favorites such as Coreopsis or Gaillardia. Foliage forms a tight clump and is very striking when planted en masse, or planted with silvery leaved companions. ‘Mars Midget’ is a fairly short-lived perennial, but will attract many pollinators to your garden. A sunny, moist site is preferred, but with regular watering, ‘Mars Midget’ can tolerate average soils. A meadow favorite. 16” tall x 20” wide.
