Aubrieta hybrida ‘Axcent™ Burgundy’ USPP (Rock Cress) wakes up spring with wine-toned flowers with bright yellow eyes. Purple-burgundy blooms cover the plant in early spring, providing early-season pollen for bees, hummingbirds, and butterflies. It’s a lovely groundcover or rock garden perennial and can soften path edges with its graceful form. Aubrieta is reliably waterwise once established and can handle the harsh heat of summer, even in a rock garden. Cold hardy and heat tolerant, it’s an easy-care member of a waterwise garden.
Description
Aubrieta hybrida ‘Axcent™ Burgundy’ USPP (Rock Cress) forms mats of soft gray-green foliage that easily cover ground and are covered in burgundy flowers in spring. Plant it in a full sun location in average soil with good drainage. They are excellent in rock or alpine gardens, along a path, and in containers. Water moderately to establish, thereafter it’s waterwise and will withstand even hot summers in a rock garden. Plant them with spring blooming bulbs such as crocus, daffodils, Muscari, and early tulips for heightened color. Trim back plants when flowering has finished to encourage thick growth. Native to the Mediterranean region it is a cold-hardy plant that is a low-maintenance solution for xeric spring color. Hardy in zones 6-9, its foliage is evergreen.
